The New York Islanders defeated the Buffalo Sabres 2-1 tonight in Buffalo to earn their second win in a row, and their second win on the road this season. The win gives the Islanders five points in their last four games dating back to an overtime loss against the Philadelphia Flyers last Wednesday.
It was a goalie showdown in Buffalo. Al Montoya for the Islanders and Jonas Enroth for the Sabres were both fantastic. Montoya saved 30 of the 31 shots he faced, and Enroth saved 28 of the 30 shots he faced. Montoya had a goals-against-average of 1.35 and a save-percentage of .950 tonight. That improves his numbers on the season to 2.07 and .933. Montoya also now has the most wins of all three goalies for the Islanders.
Matt Moulson opened the scoring by deflecting a slap shot from Mark Streit at 6:47 of the first period while on the powerplay to give the Islanders a one-goal lead. Streit and P.A. Parenteau got the assists.
Jochen Hecht then tied the game for Buffalo at 1:54 of the third period. Jason Pominville and Thomas Vanek got the assists.
Brian Rolston got the game winner for the Islanders at 9:23 of the third period. He almost had a goal earlier, but a Sabres defenseman kept it out of the net. Thanks to some hard work from David Ullstrom and Josh Bailey, Rolston was able to finally seal the deal.
